We came to Griechenbeisl for dinner on a Sunday a little after 7pm without a reservation and were able to get a table outdoors (as most places here, there is always outdoor and indoor seating) but we wanted a view of the street and opted for that. The ambiance was very relaxed and the service was attentive. Our server brought us some table bread which was very fresh with a paprika spread while we thought about what drinks and food to order. We got two glasses of white wine which were very good and refreshing. For food we split got:
- Smoked duck appetizer: delicious! Really thinly sliced yet flavorful and tender pieces of smoked duck that come with some orange slices and an apple salad that was really similar to coleslaw. Loved the combination of the smoky duck and sweet apple. Really nice presentation.
- Fries: very solid thick cut fries! Not greasy and perfectly salted. We purposefully got this with our appetizer round instead of as a side with our main meal. The fries went very well with the salad from the dish above.
- Beef goulash: my boyfriend ordered this and it was very generously sized. Really tender meat and a nice flavor of paprika and onions mixed with the meat juices. It came with a dumpling like patty that tasted a little bit like corn and really helped soak up all the sauce. Very comforting and filling dish!
- Chicken breast with arugula salad: I got this chicken really expecting a large portion of chicken over a small base of arugula but turned out being more like a salad instead, which was overall good, but I would order something else next time like the schnitzel-- which looked delicious by the way-- to get a better sense of the local cuisine. Felt really light and healthy though if that's what you are looking for!
Overall very good service and solid food. The location is lowkey but has a really nice ambiance, especially outside near the street. Stumbled upon this place but really happy we did! Would come back again for a relaxed dinner in Vienna.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 6 ene 2023
Yelp Review 2023 #7:
Revered as Vienna's oldest restaurant does not equate greatness. I've been to really old restaurants that also had fantastic food. Griechenbeisl was just ok BUT when everything in Vienna is fully booked on Christmas months in advance - any hot meal at a restaurant will do and for that I'm grateful for this place. I made a reservation here 2 months in advance. And sure enough, people with no reservations came here hoping to snag a table - but they had to wait.
We arrived 2 hours earlier than our reserved time but they gave us a table anyway. THANK YOU!!! The place does look its age and it's quirky. Google Maps told us we've already arrived - we weeks confused. "It looks like gaudy restaurant that tour groups take you to." So, we kept walking back and forth looking for Griechenbeisl. We went to the side of the door that looks like an entrance but isn't.
We were greeted by the friendly host. I told him we were 2 hours but we're hungry. He showed us to our table. All the servers were friendly.
The menu is limited. A few soups, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. They'll give you a basket of semi-warm bread and pepper cream cheese (like pimiento). We got a pumpkin soup, Wiener schnitzel, pork shoulder that comes with a side of sauerkraut. After being in the Middle East where pork isn't available, I was so happy about that crispy pork shoulder.
We skipped dessert. I had specific places bookmarked for that. Overall, the food was alright. The friendliness happens in the beginning and I feel like we waited a long time to place our order, ask for water, and another round of drinks. A 2-course dinner that lasted almost 2 hours.
The tables are really close to each other so, it does feel cramped in there and it gets loud. They have a few dining areas.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - 19 jun 2023Reseña actualizada
So we returned 5 years later and this time we both ordered the weekday special, pork Schnitzel, potato and we had a rolled crepe soup, accompanied by a glass of wine. We both had the same thoughts as the previous visit, it was good but we've tasted better schnitzel. On the plus side the schnitzel was pretty large so we asked for a 'go bag' but they left out the potatoes we didn't finish, just gave us the schnitzel. Maybe it was uncouth of us to ask for a go box but it was too much for lunch and we didn't want to waste it. All in all it was a 'good' lunch just not a great lunch.

The place is a bit famous with the various famous signatures in the cellar ceilings and, yes that was cool, but the food prices were a bit high for what we got. My partner had the schnitzel with a potato salad. The schnitzel was good but, in our opinion, it wasn't the best we had in Vienna (at least according to our US taste buds).
I had originally asked about what appeared to be fried chicken but the waiter asked if I loved Kentucky Fried chicken... Seeing that he poo poo'd my culinary selection he upsold me to what amounted to a baked chicken with rosemary over noodles and in a tasty brown sauce. yes, it was pretty good, just not 25 euro good.
Still, we'd recommend checking out the place, if for nothing else the seating outside is not on a busy street and quite lovely. - 7 oct 2022
Tucked away off the beaten path, find this traditional and authentic Viennese restaurant and bar, serving since 1447! Enjoyed a deliciously classic Wienerschniztel meal! There are several menu choices for dinners, apps and more. Overall, solid 4.0+ rating for excellent food quality, efficient service and simple ambience (we sat upstairs since not having a reservation). Expect to pay $20-25euro for entrees.
Today we started with Alt Wiener Souppentopf (Viennese soup pot for 2); served hot, this hearty broth was filled with diced meat, spaghetti and some veggies. It was a good start on a cool fall-like day. We opted for this knowing we'd get our fill with Wienerschnitzel dinner, which we shared given the generous portion size.
Oh what a treat to get one of the classic dishes served in a landmark restaurant! The meat was very thin and tender, breaded and cooked just right - excellent meal! It was served with a simple potato field salad, a nice compliment to the entree. Of course we had to have a cold bier to go with our meal, but they also had plenty of wine choices if desired.
Definitely a hidden gem you might not find if only searching or walking the main thoroughfares, but totally worth checking out for a traditional Viennese meal! And remember to drop some coins for Augustin! Enjoy!!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Damaris C.Wellington, Estados Unidos7489227 sept 2023
Full of history and old charm. How many times do you get to eat at a 600 year old restaurant??? The food was just ok.. wished we would have order the pork knuckle instead.
The dessert was delicious, some type of pound cake with plum sauce.
Service was good but we went for lunch and wasn't too busy.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Karen J.Sellersville, Estados Unidos131232330 jul 2023
Excellent experience! Neat decor and location. The beef tar tar was great as a starter. Loved the viewer schnitzel...perfectly done. You must get the strudel for dessert...the best I've had! The ambiance was elevated with the live musician in our room.

What can amazing Viennese meal here at Griechenbeisl! They start the meal out with some bread and some unique cheese spread, which was really tasty. My wife and I ordered the beef goulash meal as well as the Wiener schnitzel. Both plates of food were so good and filling! What a great dining experience!

Opened its door in 1447, Griechenbeisl is the oldest restaurant in Austria with amazing history. Beethoven, Mozart and Mark Twain were among their frequent guests. Request dine in their famous Mark Twain room and admire the past patrons' autographs on the wall.
